Frames are fun and useful items on Muzy. This clever “TV – Bad Reception Filter” by Cooperweb makes it easy to put any image on Muzy on television… with a little bit of fuzzy “television snow” over the image. Frames can be simple picture frames to fit around any image, or they can be complex backgrounds with a cut-out area to place an image behind.

Frames can be used as a large element on the canvas, literally framing the image. Or frames can become a part of a larger collage, an element that contains another element within it. Read the rest of this entry »

Muzy drawings and collages have transparent areas and opaque areas, depending on how they’ve been created. When do you want your drawing to be transparent, and when do you want it opaque? And how do you make the right areas transparent or opaque? When you start a Muzy drawing or collage, you begin with an entirely transparent background. There’s nothing there, not white, just nothing. You can see what areas are transparent by clicking the “background preview” checkbox in the lower right.  The gray checkerboard will appear wherever the drawing is transparent. When you’re making a collage, you don’t necessarily want to place things next to each other, or near or around each other. Sometimes you want to place things over each other, and layer them so that you can see down through the layers. And the items you want to use may or may not be transparent.

It’s pretty easy to get the effect you’re looking for, though, with the blue background over the notes in this collage, and the red dots. All you need is the eraser tool, and you can make the objects as transparent as you like.

The following video example shows me using the eraser tool to get the red dots more transparent.

A Muzy collage by Gerbear. Click to view.

Muzy is more than a drawing tool. It’s a collage tool. That makes it unique. That doesn’t mean Muzy can’t or shouldn’t or isn’t used as a drawing tool. It’s a great drawing tool, too. But the social aspect of Muzy is about interacting with other people’s drawings, and creating interesting and exciting collages by using objects in new ways. Part of the Muzy experience is drawing items to be used, not just for their own sake. Of course, the added bonus is that, when people use your drawings, you’ll earn Muzy karma… and having lots of karma is always a good thing. Read the rest of this entry »
